(ConservativeHub.com) – On April 24, Fox News announced that Tucker Carlson would be leaving the cable network. Carlson was reportedly one of the network’s biggest prime-time stars and consistently had high ratings. With the shocking exit of Carlson, Fox News is now going to have to find someone who can replace Carlson, according to a report from The Hill.
Carlson’s exit from the network comes after Fox settled the defamation lawsuit with Dominion Voting Systems. As part of the case’s settlement, the network is expected to pay $787.5 million to the company. Fox was sued over their coverage of former President Donald Trump’s claims of a rigged election, widespread voter fraud, and the company’s software.
Many of the network’s top hosts and stars were referred to in the defamation lawsuit. Carlson specifically was at the center of the case which barely managed to get settled before going to court. Weeks of testimony in court could have potentially caused embarrassment for the network, The Hill reported.
However, the reasons behind Carlson’s departure are not yet clear, and it is also unclear whether Carlson’s exit from the network was in any part influenced by the settlement. Still, Monday’s announcement did not include any references to whether Carlson’s departure was affected by the Dominion settlement.
Mark Conrad, an associate professor of Law and Ethics at Fordham University’s Gabelli School of Business noted that following the settlement, and with other lawsuits still pending it might have just been the case that Fox “concluded that Carlson was simply too toxic to the company” and its finances. Fox has not made any statements about Carlson’s departure aside from thanking him for his work and contributions to the network.
The Hill notes that there have been mixed observations about how easily the network will be able to replace Carlson, and what kind of long-term impact the change will have.
