(ConservativeHub.com) – On Monday, July 1, Rep. Joe Morelle (D-N.Y.) stated that he would introduce a new constitutional amendment that would reverse the recent Supreme Court ruling protecting the president’s core power from criminal prosecution.
In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Morelle said he would be introducing an amendment to attempt to reverse the “harmful decision” made by the court and make sure that the U.S. president is not above the law. He proceeded to blame the country’s highest court for failing to prioritize democracy.
The Supreme Court handed down a ruling this past week along ideological lines that the president should be granted immunity for the actions taken during their time in office related to their core responsibilities. The Court added that the President should be “presumptively immune” from prosecution related to official acts.
It is largely believed that Former President Donald Trump was handed a win with the Supreme Court’s decision. The ruling has sent his election case back to the lower court, which will ultimately decide whether the actions he took leading up to Jan. 6, 2021 should be protected from criminal prosecution.
The Supreme Court’s rulings on constitutional issues are considered final, with the only possibility of alteration being an amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Morelle is one of the Democrats who has slammed the ruling of the Supreme Court. The Democrats have also repeatedly stated that no one should be above the law, not even the U.S. president. They argue that the recent ruling goes against what the country’s founders intended.
