White House Removes Tweet After Getting Called Out by Fact-Checkers

(ConservativeHub.com) – The White House posted a tweet bragging about how Social Security recipients would receive the largest raise in a decade under the Biden administration. However, fact-checkers on Twitter quickly stepped in to point out that the post was missing important context, which led to the administration deleting the post.

Twitter pointed out underneath the White House’s post that the Cost of living adjustment (COLA) increases cause a boost in Social Security payments, which occur yearly. This suggests inflation had a hand in the social security increases.

Still, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre played the post off as a mistake. During the November 2 press briefing, a reporter questioned the tweet, and her reply stated the tweet “was not complete.” She explained it lacked context. The press secretary said reductions in Medicare premiums combined with this adjustment would keep more money in seniors’ pockets. Because it didn’t have all the relevant information, the team removed it.

The annual COLA increase for Social Security recipients will be 8.7% in 2023, according to the Social Security Administration. The adjustment began in 1975, and the highest previous raise (11.2%) was in 1981. Before the adjustments followed the COLA index, Congress determined whether payments would receive a boost.
