(ConservativeHub.com) – On Thursday, May 9, a lawyer for the wife of a U.S. Army soldier who was detained in Russia while on a visit to his girlfriend said she had retained the services of a divorce lawyer in 2022 and didn’t know anything about what he was doing.

On May 2, Staff Sergeant Gordon Black, an infantry soldier, was arrested in Vladivostok, a Russian port city. Black, accused of stealing from his girlfriend, was charged with criminal misconduct.

On Tuesday, May 7, the Vladivostok branch of the Russian Interior Ministry released a statement revealing that there was a conflict between Black and his girlfriend. Afterward, some of her money reportedly went missing, so she turned him in to the authorities.

Black had previously been stationed in South Korea. However, his military duty came to an end there and he was expected to report to Fort Cavazos in Texas. His arrest, however, has prevented him from returning to the US.

In a statement, Brett Pritchard, the attorney of Gordon Black’s wife Megan Black, noted that she wanted to clarify that she “had no advance knowledge of Mr. Black’s” Russia travel plans.

Pritchard revealed that Gordon Black’s estranged wife only became aware that her husband was absent from Fort Cavazos when Army investigators contacted her to ask about him.

Melody Jones, Gordon Black’s mother, shared her belief on GMA that her son was set up, saying that the relationship between Gordon and his girlfriend had been “volatile.” Jones explained her suspicion that her son’s girlfriend might be a spy.

Pritchard also stated that although Megan Black believed her husband’s decision to visit Russia was a bad idea given the strain in relations between the US and Russia, she also believed he had been motivated by his “extra-marital affair” and not and kind of “geopolitical intrigue.”
