(ConservativeHub.com) – Los Angeles native Niko Honarbakhsh was reportedly shot and killed in February during a visit to a Mexican resort. Her husband, a former U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) official, said that the woman had been spending less time in Los Angeles because of the increase in the levels of crime.

Honarbakhsh had gained over 120,000 followers on Instagram as she documented her travels and life. She was shot at the Mia Beach Club in Tulum on Feb. 9, which is a popular area for American tourists, according to Fox Newa. She was reportedly killed when she got caught in the crossfire between two suspected drug dealers.

The woman’s husband Karl Perman, who had previously worked in law enforcement in Detroit and Chicago, told Fox News Digital last week that the two of them would often fly between their condominium in Cancun, Mexico, and home in Beverly Hills, California. He added that this was something that they had been doing for the last five years, but that now, he found himself planning a funeral.

The couple was married for almost 15 years and had met through friends in Chicago. They then ended up building a life together along with their two dogs near Los Angeles where Honarbakhsh had grown up. However, recently the woman felt unsafe in her home due to the increase in crime and homelessness. This feeling was further exacerbated by the work that her husband did in the private sector, which often required him to travel.

Perman told Fox News Digital they were aware of the advisory of the State Department, and of the reports about crime in their area, and yet they often felt safer in Cancun than in Los Angeles depending on the neighborhood.
