(ConservativeHub.com) – As the weather turns cold, snow and low temperatures can create a false sense of security for those traversing icy waterways. Children are especially at risk of falling victim to thin ice. After a cold stretch in the UK, the unthinkable happened on December 11 when four young boys fell through the ice on a lake at Babbs Mill Park in Solihull, England.
The boys ranged in age from 6 to 11. The youngest of the group was initially rushed to the hospital, where he remained in critical condition for a few days before passing away. The other boys were all pronounced dead soon after arriving at the hospital due to cardiac arrest caused by the polar plunge when they fell through thin ice. Authorities believed there were possibly two more victims, but extensive searches failed to turn up any other children in the area.

The West Midlands Police continue investigating the incident to discover what happened. Via Facebook, they encouraged anyone with a video or information to contact them.
The Old Farmer’s Almanac cautions that pond or lake ice requires about three inches of thickness for one person to walk safely. A good way to check for thickness is by appearance — visible cracks or moving water signal potential hazards. Blue or clear ice is generally safe, but caution is always essential because waters freeze unevenly.
