On her last day in power, Tulsi Gabbard walked out of the intelligence world by tossing a political grenade straight at Anthony Fauci and the entire COVID narrative.
Story Snapshot
- Gabbard’s declassified files claim Fauci funded risky Wuhan lab research and then shaped how spies talked about COVID’s origin.
- Official documents confirm a sprawling, U.S.-funded global biolab network that ordinary Americans were never fully told about.
- Fauci’s own 2024 testimony and later hearings show a very different story, raising sharp questions about who is spinning whom.
- This fight is about more than COVID: it is about secrecy, trust, and whether public health now serves politics instead of the people.
Gabbard’s final-day detonation aimed straight at Fauci
Tulsi Gabbard did not leave quietly. On her final day as Director of National Intelligence, she released what she called “never-before-seen” documents that, in her view, expose how Anthony Fauci helped fund dangerous coronavirus research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology and then worked with politically aligned intelligence officials to bury the lab-leak theory.[2][3] Her office says the files show Fauci directed millions in taxpayer money into gain-of-function-style work on bat coronaviruses and later denied key contacts under oath.
News outlets summarizing the release report that the documents include email chains and meeting notes tying Fauci to intelligence briefings on COVID’s origin during the height of the pandemic.[1][3] According to Gabbard, those same briefings fed into official assessments that leaned away from a lab leak and toward a natural origin, even as some analysts internally pushed the opposite view. She frames the whole package as proof of a cover-up to protect reputations and past funding decisions.
The hidden global biolab network finally dragged into daylight
Gabbard’s Fauci files arrived only days after another bombshell from her office: a formal press release from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence itself acknowledging long-standing U.S. government funding for more than 120 biological laboratories in over 30 countries.[5] That statement says evidence about the full scope and financing of these labs “had been knowingly withheld from the American people” and that several facilities engaged in hazardous pathogen work, including dangerous gain-of-function research, with “very little visibility or oversight.”[5]
The same release highlights U.S.-funded labs in Ukraine that intelligence agencies had warned housed dangerous pathogens and were at risk from Russian attack or seizure.[5] That is not some fringe blog; it is an on-the-record intelligence community statement under Gabbard’s signature. Senator Rand Paul quickly seized on the disclosures, arguing they confirmed years of concerns about risky overseas labs supported by American taxpayers and demanding a presidential commission to review this research “lab by lab and pathogen by pathogen.”[7] From a common-sense conservative view, the picture is simple: Washington shipped high-risk biology overseas, kept voters in the dark, and hoped nothing would go wrong.
What the declassified Fauci documents actually claim
So what do the Fauci-specific files appear to show? Conservative outlets that reviewed the tranche say they include at least 67 documents and emails linking Fauci to internal intelligence debates over COVID’s origin.[5][6] One reported item is a June 4, 2021 meeting at the Central Intelligence Agency’s Weapons and Counterproliferation Mission Center, where Fauci allegedly pressed analysts to keep pursuing a natural-origin theory and talk to scientists who backed that line.[5] Gabbard and her allies say this was not neutral advice but pressure that helped lock in an official story.
The documents also reportedly contain whistleblower claims that intelligence officers who favored the lab-leak theory faced professional retaliation or had their views sidelined in written products.[5][8] If accurate, that points to something far bigger than one scientist’s ego. It suggests parts of the intelligence community may have acted less like truth-finders and more like bodyguards for a politically convenient narrative. For anyone who watched agencies bend under political pressure in other fights, that pattern feels familiar and dangerous.[18]
Fauci’s testimony and the establishment push back
Fauci and his defenders insist these accusations twist the record. In his 2024 closed-door interview with the House Select Subcommittee, Fauci said that when he denied funding “gain-of-function” research in Wuhan, he meant it in the narrow sense defined by the federal P3CO oversight framework.[12] That is lawyerly language, but it matters: he claims he was talking about a specific regulatory definition, not every possible kind of risky virus work that common sense might consider dangerous.
Democrats on the subcommittee later highlighted that after digging through more than 425,000 pages of documents and interviewing 20 officials, they saw nothing that proved the extreme claims that Fauci lied about funding research that caused the pandemic.[10][13] At the same time, those same materials exposed serious problems that should worry any taxpayer: Fauci admitted he signed off on every foreign and domestic grant from his institute without personally reviewing proposals, and that he could not confirm whether his agency had any real oversight of foreign labs it funded.[11] That is not proof of malice, but it screams bureaucratic arrogance and a broken system begging to be abused.
Politicized science, broken trust, and what comes next
Both sides now weaponize “the science.” Progressive critics say the Trump White House bullied health agencies and edited guidance for political gain, with a Government Accountability Office report documenting dozens of such attacks during COVID.[18][19] Conservatives point to Gabbard’s disclosures and years of shifting public health edicts as proof that elite experts used “science” as a shield for their own politics and careers. Either way, the result is the same: trust has collapsed, and once that breaks, people stop listening even when officials are right.[24][25]

Gabbard’s last-day barrage does not settle who is legally guilty. The documents are real, but their meaning will be fought over by lawyers, committees, and cable hosts for years.[6] What they already prove is simpler and more damning: Washington ran a vast, poorly monitored web of high-risk biolabs; key facts were hidden from the public; oversight failed; and the small circle of “experts” making life-and-death calls answered to each other more than to you. A serious country would not let that stand, no matter which party benefits from the next spin.
