Paul said the lawyer, David Schertler, had no permission to speak and had been told directly not to sit at the witness table with Fauci. He did it anyway, and Capitol Police removed him on Paul’s order.

The removal came during a hearing years in the making. Fauci had agreed earlier this year to testify, then pulled out, prompting Paul to issue a formal subpoena compelling him to appear. One entry stood out. On January 26, 2020, Fauci reportedly wrote that “we know the market was not the source. It was the amplifier,” referring to the Wuhan seafood market once floated as the pandemic’s starting point. That private note sits uneasily next to years of public statements downplaying a lab origin, and it gave Paul fresh ammunition heading into the hearing.

A Feud With a Long Paper Trail

This clash didn’t come out of nowhere. Paul has spent years building a case file against Fauci, including a criminal referral to the Department of Justice tied to claims Fauci lied about the National Institutes of Health funding gain-of-function research in Wuhan. Paul reissued that referral this year after reports surfaced that Fauci’s pardon from former President Joseph Biden was signed using an autopen rather than Biden’s own hand.

A federal grand jury also indicted Fauci’s former senior adviser, David Morens, on three felony charges this year for allegedly hiding COVID-related records from public disclosure. Paul has pointed to that case as evidence of a broader pattern of concealment inside the agencies Fauci once led, not an isolated lapse by one aide.

Fauci’s Side and the Open Questions

Fauci’s legal team has pushed back hard, arguing Paul’s years of public statements calling for Fauci’s prosecution poisoned the process before he ever sat down to testify. That’s a fair point worth weighing. A chairman who has already declared a witness guilty in public does invite questions about whether the hearing is fact-finding or theater.

Still, the documents speak for themselves. Diary entries, deleted records, an indicted former adviser, and an autopen-signed pardon are not accusations conjured from thin air. They’re a paper trail Congress has every right to examine, and taxpayers who funded the research in question deserve straight answers, not more evasion.
