(ConservativeHub.com) – Representative Eric Swalwell, a Democrat, is leading the House Select Committee’s efforts to investigate the events of January 6th, 2021, following the GOP’s acquisition of a majority in the House. Swalwell is now focusing on preventing former President Donald Trump from setting foot in the Capitol in the future.
Swalwell has co-sponsored a Democratic resolution with Representative Nikema Williams of Georgia, which seeks to prevent Trump and several of his top aides from entering the Capitol due to their attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. The resolution calls on the House, Senate Sergeant at Arms, and U.S. Capitol Police to take action to enforce the ban.
The Select Committee’s investigation into the January 6th attack on the Capitol revealed that Trump’s allies committed criminal contempt of Congress, and the Committee made multiple criminal referrals to the Justice Department. The resolution argues that these efforts to overturn the election results damaged Congress’s constitutional role in certifying the election results.
If successful, the resolution would prevent not only Trump but also several of his former advisers and counselors, from setting foot inside the Capitol due to their involvement in supporting claims of election fraud and attempting to overturn the election results. These include well-known figures like Steve Bannon, Rudy Giuliani, Mark Meadows, and others.
Trump responded to the resolution in a statement recently, first making fun of Swalwell for being booted from the Intelligence Committee. He also accused Swalwell of trying to have him banned from the Capitol “for publicity purposes only.”
