GOP Members Speak Out Against Trump Investigation

( – On Tuesday, July 18, some Republicans rushed to former President Donald Trump’s defense after he announced that he had received a letter for the Department of Justice’s Jan. 6, 2021 investigation.

On the same day, Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) suggested that the federal administration was targeting Trump because they were scared that he would be the winner of the presidential election next November. He told reporters that recent polls have shown that support for Trump has increased and that he is now performing better than President Biden in the presidential polls. McCarthy claimed that this is why the government is now going after him.

He proceeded to claim that the American people want “equal justice” and that the idea that they make use of it to target those who “politically disagree with them is wrong.” Following the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol attack McCarthy had stated that Trump did bear some responsibility for the incident, but stopped short of calling for his impeachment.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) also criticized the decision and questioned why the letter was sent right about when the House Oversight Committee was scheduled to hear the testimonies from two IRS whistleblowers who would be talking about the government’s attempts to slow down the investigation into Hunter Biden.
He claimed to the House GOP conference presser that the Biden administration was once again going after Trump leading to questions about the existence of a double standard.

In a statement, Trump said that the letter instructed him to appear before a grand jury within four days. He further stated that it was likely that he would soon face charges in connection to the case.
