(ConservativeHub.com) – On March 27, Senate Republicans revealed that they would bring forth a resolution that, if successful, would overturn President Biden’s executive order for federal student loan forgiveness.

According to The Hill, the Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution introduced by the Senators would effectively get rid of the Biden administration’s plan currently being reviewed by the Supreme Court. Biden’s plan is intended to provide federal student loan borrowers with up to $20,000 in forgiveness. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the forgiveness plan would cost the government $400 billion over the next three decades.

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) is leading the effort against the plan with Sens. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Joni Ernst (R-IA) and 35 other Republicans on his side. If the CRA passes, Congress would have the right to look over and potentially toss any regulations enacted by a federal agency, according to The Hill.

According to the Government Accountability Office, Biden’s student loan forgiveness program would also be subject to this resolution.

Cassidy in a statement said that Biden was “shifting the burden of student loans” away from people who knowingly accepted them and placing that burden with those who have either paid off their debts or had opted to not to attend college.

In order to be successful, the resolution would need to pass through not only the GOP-led House, but also the Democrat-controlled Senate. According to The Hill, it is likely that Biden will veto this move, but the CRA could result in some members of the Democratic party having to take a stand on the student loan forgiveness plan.
