(ConservativeHub.com) – Katie Graham, who suffers from postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), has shown how her service dog is essential in helping keep her safe when she is having a health episode.

Graham’s condition will often result in her blood volume being affected when standing up. However, Bailey, her Australian shepherd service dog, is trained to be able to use his sense of smell to determine when the levels of Graham’s heart rate have increased to “unsafe” levels.

In a video captured by Graham that was posted by 6abc Philadelphia in April, she is seen standing up, only to have Bailey alert her that she should sit down. The service dog is also able to help bring Graham her medication and water if necessary.

She revealed during an appearance on “America’s Newsroom” on August 2 that her dog has a high drive in taking action and there is nothing that will get in his way. To explain how Bailey recognizes whether she is safe or not based on her scent, she explained that the body has certain pheromones that it releases when under stress or experiencing a sudden change. She explained that this pheromone is what Bailey has been trained to recognize and react to.

Graham stated that she was the one to train Bailey on her own after first getting him when he was an 8-week-old puppy. As part of the help that Bailey can provide to Graham, he is able to do deep pressure therapy which helps better regulate blood flow.
