(ConservativeHub.com) – Jack Burkman and Jacob Wohl, who are conservative operatives, were found guilty of trying to prevent New York’s Black voters from voting in the past election by mail. The two have now been ordered to pay a maximum of $1.25 million in restitution.

The two men were found in 2023 to be liable for targeting Black voters with threatening and false messages that aimed to discourage them from casting a ballot. At the time, U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero argued that the two men had been in violation of both state and federal civic rights laws.

On Tuesday, April 9, New York Attorney General Letitia James revealed that Burkman and Wohl had conceded to the $1 million judgment to individual plaintiffs, the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation (NCBCP), and the Office of the Attorney General (OAG).

The original lawsuit had been filed by James in May 2021, according to The Hill.

The two men have until Dec. 31 to pay at least $105,000. If they fail to pay that amount within the following 30 days, then the payment is going to increase to $1.25 million.

On Tuesday, James argued in a statement that the right to vote was a cornerstone of the country’s democracy and that it belonged to everyone. She added that she would not let anyone come between the people and that right.

In October 2022, the two men pleaded guilty to a single count of felony telecommunications fraud over the robocalls each. A month later, they were sentenced to a two-year probation, 500 hours of community service, and six months of electronic monitoring.
