Protesters formed lines, vocally opposing the attendees of the summit.
Reports from local media highlighted that some students distributed flyers on campus labeling Clinton as Wellesley’s “most beloved war criminal” and accused her of having “blood on her hands.” The college administration acknowledged the presence of the protests but chose not to publicly denounce them. Sheilah Shaw Horton, the vice president and dean of students, issued a statement urging protestors to adhere to the college’s demonstration policy and to respect the Code of Student Conduct, emphasizing the importance of safety for both individuals and the broader community.
Clinton’s visit to academic institutions has often been met with opposition. For instance, during a session at Columbia University in February, she was repeatedly interrupted by individuals labeling her as a “war criminal.” The recent demonstration at Wellesley occurred shortly after Clinton made remarks on the “Tonight Show” hosted by Jimmy Fallon, where she addressed voter dissatisfaction with the presidential choices available. When Fallon inquired about what she would say to voters discontented with having to choose between former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden, Clinton bluntly advised them to “Get over yourself,” asserting that the options were clear. She contrasted one candidate as “old, effective, and compassionate,” who “really cares about people,” against another who is “old and has been charged with 91 felonies.”
Clinton expressed bewilderment over the difficulty of this choice, stressing the significance of the upcoming election and the existential nature of the decision facing the country regarding its democratic future. She criticized those who overlook the severity of the situation, saying that Trump and his affiliates have openly communicated their intentions for the country’s direction.
