(ConservativeHub.com) – On May 9, former Vice President Mike Pence stated that former President Donald Trump’s administration during his time in office could have performed better in controlling spending, while also calling for action on the current debt problem.

According to a recent report from NBC, Pence specifically noted that while trillions of dollars given to families and businesses in 2020 were what was needed by the government during a time of a national emergency, he does believe that they should have had better control of spending during their administration.

These remarks came during an exclusive interview at a time when President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., are in negotiations trying to reach an agreement that would help them prevent the government from defaulting on its debts.

Pence in his interview said that the Trump administration played a part in accumulating debt, according to NBC. However, he also slammed Biden for the large amount of spending he took part in during his time in office. He added that Biden should sit down in “good faith” and find a solution that would most benefit the country.

The Republican-led House has already approved legislation intended to increase the debt ceiling and cut spending. However, Biden and other Democrats want to see the debt ceiling increased without any conditions attached to the bill. The Treasury Department has noted that currently, the federal government could default on its debts as early as June 1.

In his statement, Pence also supported McCarthy’s choice to exclude Social Security and Medicare from spending cuts.
