New House Speaker Generates Buzz Among Democrats

(ConservativeHub.com) – After more than three weeks without a House Speaker, the lower chamber of Congress has a leader again thanks to lawmakers’ decision to vote in GOP Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA). However, the choice of Johnson seems to have caused some buzz among House Democrats.

According to Axios, some Democrats aren’t even overly familiar with the new Speaker, who is currently on his fourth term in the House. Some of those who are, however, have reportedly been giving their colleagues the rundown about him over text. For instance, they have compared him to hardline Republicans like Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL). The outlet reported that Jamie Raskin (R-MD) said Johnson “has better manners” than either Jordan or Gaetz, but they’ve all largely held the same stances on “defense of American constitutional democracy and freedom.” Democratic lawmakers also noted that Johnson was supportive of former President Donald Trump’s claims about the past election. Meanwhile, Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) suggested that Johnson was an unusual choice, but perhaps “not for a drowning Republican conference searching for a lifesaver.”

These reactions come following criticism from Democrats about how long it was taking for the GOP to vote in a new Speaker. Several House Democrats took to social media ahead of Johnson’s promotion to push for GOP lawmakers to come up with a solution, and to consider a bipartisan solution, which would allow the lower chamber to continue being operational again.

The statements were made after House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) dropped out of the Speaker race.

Rep. Norma Torres (D-CA) in a video she posted of herself referred to the 10 Republican lawmakers who attempted to win the Speaker’s vote, including former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. After listing each of the names Torres, would simply say “nope” and cross the name of the unsuccessful candidate. She then attacked a text to the screen that referred to this as an update on the chaos that has erupted among Republicans.

Rep. Steven Hosford (D-NV) in a post on X, shared a meme that simply read that he likes seeing the House. He added in his post the words “House Republicans.” Hosford then noted that he was sure that some Representatives were enjoying the situation but that it was time to bring an end to the chaos, extremism, and dysfunction and to resume the House’s operations. He added that the only way that appeared to be possible was through a bipartisan agreement.
