Poison Centers Mark Increase in Calls Related To Semaglutide

(ConservativeHub.com) – Reports from America’s Poison Centers have shown that there is a large rise in calls related to diabetic and weight-loss drugs. According to recent reports, from January to November of 2023, there were a total of 3,000 calls connected to semaglutide, a medication used for diabetes. This marks a 15-fold increase since 2019.

Many of those who have made calls related to this medication have done so after accidental overdoses. Some of these calls have also resulted in hospitalizations due to symptoms of stomach pain, vomiting, and severe nausea. CNN reported that symptoms were generally eased through the use of medication and intravenous fluids.

America’s Poison Centers clinical managing director Kait Brown noted that in most cases, the report relates to people having made dosing errors. She pointed out that cases often involve individuals who might have accidentally taken a double or wrong dose of the medication.

Semaglutide is a key ingredient in the drug Ozempic, which is used for diabetes, and Wegovy, which is used for weight loss. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) previously put out an update on Ozempic’s label warning that the drug could potentially lead to a blockage of intestinal contents. The update was made after a number of reports on this.

Ozempic’s label stated that because an unknown number of people voluntarily report these reactions, it’s not feasible to determine a causal relationship or the frequency of the reactions. Wegovy has a similar warning as Ozempic in its packaging.
