(ConservativeHub.com) – On Thursday, March 28, Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., had a meeting with Texas Governor Greg Abbott in which they discussed the immigration crisis and the Republican response to it in the House.

The meeting came only a few hours after Johnson had sent the Senate a letter informing them that the articles of impeachment against Alejandro Mayorkas, the Homeland Security Secretary, would be arriving in their hands on April 10.

Fox News reported that in a statement following the meeting, Johnson argued that the Biden administration had endangered the American people by opening the border and making the country accessible to cartels, criminals, and traffickers. He claimed that the administration had failed in its constitutional duty to ensure that the border is secure. He said this is not a role that any state should have to take on.

Johnson continued by saying that the Department of Justice was abusing its power by targeting Texas over the state’s efforts to “safeguard its citizens.” He said that those in Texas and in the US as a whole deserved better than this.

He further stated that he supported the efforts of the Texas governor to secure his state’s border with Mexico and noted that the two of them had talked about how to help hold the Biden administration accountable.

A statement from Abbott’s office said the governor had encouraged Johnson to approve legislation that would take steps to prevent illegal crossings between ports of entry. His office also noted in the statement that Abbott had pushed for Johnson to support Texas as it fights against the federal administration.
