(ConservativeHub.com) – House Speaker Mike Johnson has officially invited President Joe Biden to deliver the annual State of the Union address in March in Congress. The speech is mandated by the Constitution.

In his Saturday, January 7 letter, Johnson stated that the country was going through a “moment of great challenge.” He added that it was his duty to send Biden this invitation so that he could fulfill his constitutional duty of reporting on the state of the union.

Biden posted his acceptance of the invitation in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, where he stated that he looked forward to the State of the Union. This is going to be the first state of the Union since Johnson became the House Speaker and the second one since the GOP won the House majority in 2022.

In 2023, former Speaker Kevin McCarthy extended the invitation to Biden calling for him to attend the Congress’ joint session on February 7, 2023. At the time, McCarthy noted that the American people had voted for a Republican majority in order for the country to move towards a new direction and debate their priorities.

McCarthy, who was ousted from the position of Speaker in October, announced in December that he would be leaving Congress.

Recently, Johnson has spoken about the possibility of having a personal meeting with Biden to discuss the situation at the southern border, as the Republicans and many of the Democrats view the current situation as a crisis.
