(ConservativeHub.com) – On Sunday, September 3, during an appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) said that there was a “powerful argument” that could be made for former President Donald Trump being disqualified from the next presidential race because of the 14th Amendment.
The Hill reported that while on the show, Kaine spoke about the legal argument that many experts previously presented, which states that under the 14th Amendment, Trump would be disqualified from running for office. This is because the Amendment clearly states that anyone who has “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” is not allowed to hold office again.
He argued that the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, was at the time designed to be that. He said that the incident was aimed at disrupting the peaceful transfer of power which is a key aspect of the country’s democracy as outlined in the Constitution. As such, he claimed there was an important argument that could be made about Trump not qualifying to run for office.
He further noted that he thinks this is most likely going to be resolved in the courts and that for now, what the Democrats need to focus on is winning 2024. He also argued that rather than the second impeachment against Trump following the Capitol riot, it might have been better if the 14th Amendment had been brought into play.
The debate about whether Trump should be disqualified is ongoing, with many lawmakers and legal experts weighing in on the issue. One report from The Los Angeles Times suggested the issue may eventually reach the Supreme Court.
