(ConservativeHub.com) – Dearborn, Michigan, is enhancing its security measures in response to a contentious opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal that labeled the city as the “jihad capital” of America. Dearborn is recognized for having the largest Muslim population in the U.S.
The op-ed, written by Steven Stalinsky, the executive director of the Middle East Media Research Institute, claimed widespread support among Dearborn’s residents for groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, and the state of Iran. Stalinsky reported instances of demonstrators in Dearborn chanting slogans supportive of the Palestinian cause and critical of the United States.
Furthermore, Stalinsky’s piece suggested that some Dearborn residents celebrated the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, which resulted in significant casualties. He said these celebrations occurred prior to Israel’s retaliatory actions, which have led to a substantial number of Palestinian civilian deaths.
In reaction to the piece, Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud announced via social media that the city has heightened security at religious sites and key infrastructure, attributing this action to the rise in Islamophobic sentiment spurred by the op-ed. Mayor Hammoud criticized the Wall Street Journal for propagating what he deemed reckless and Islamophobic content, while also praising Dearborn as a distinguished American city.
Stalinsky defended his article to The Associated Press, insisting his intention was not to foster hate but to shed light on demonstrations within Michigan and across the U.S. where support for Hamas has been voiced, especially in light of the ongoing conflict with Israel.
The situation has drawn attention at the national level as well, with President Joe Biden denouncing all forms of hate and emphasizing the importance of not generalizing a community based on the actions of a few, specifically addressing the situation in Dearborn and condemning Islamophobia and anti-Arab sentiment.
