(ConservativeHub.com) – On Thursday, February 8, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) slammed Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) by arguing that the support he had shown towards the bipartisan border security deal was “spectacularly stupid.”

McConnell had originally supported the agreement. However, while it received the endorsement of President Joe Biden and the Democrats, it was greatly opposed by the House GOP. Ultimately, Senate Republicans turned against the bill and prevented it from advancing.

In an interview with Fox Business, Cruz argued that by supporting the bill, the Senate GOP leadership had essentially said was that in essence, they were in favor of “two-thirds of Joe Biden’s open borders.” He called this “foolish.” He proceeded to argue that the deal was “dead” within 24 hours of being released the previous Sunday. He added that the Republicans understood that they could not back legislation that would keep the U.S. border open.

Former President Donald Trump expressed big opposition to the border deal from the start and argued that the Republicans needed to not agree to it, as immigration was a key issue in the upcoming 2024 election.

However, the Democrats have flipped the script, arguing that the GOP has been ineffective and had no interest in passing policy.

Cruz argued that it was “well past time” for McConnell, who has been the head of the Senate GOP since 2007, to step down. He added that while there have been some big mistakes, this one is the worst so far.
